Principle of Infrared Heating and Bending

Infrared heating and bending is a process that uses infrared radiation to heat materials, making them pliable for bending. This technique is commonly applied to plastics, glass, and certain metals. Acrylic (PMMA) has a heat deflection temperature of 95°C, and thermoforming requires heating to 150–170°C. For a 4.5 mm thick sheet, infrared heating must achieve uniform penetration to avoid overheating and bubbling. The optimal forming state is reached when the sheet begins to sag naturally under its own weight. It is widely used in civil and industrial products that require thermoforming. Below is an explanation of its basic principles:

1. Principle of Infrared Heating

  • Infrared radiation is a type of electromagnetic wave with a wavelength range of approximately 0.7 to 1000 microns. Infrared rays can rapidly heat the surface of materials as they are absorbed and converted into thermal energy.
  • Infrared heating equipment emits specific wavelengths of infrared radiation, typically optimized for the absorption characteristics of the material.
  • During heating, the infrared energy penetrates the material's surface layer and conducts inward, achieving uniform heating.

2. Softening the Material by Heating

  • When materials are heated to a certain temperature, their molecular structure becomes more flexible or fluid. For example:
    • Thermoplastics: Become soft above their glass transition temperature.
    • Glass: Becomes pliable above its softening point (typically between 700°C and 800°C).
    • Metals: Certain metals exhibit increased plasticity near their recrystallization temperature.

3. Bending and Forming

  • Once the material reaches the appropriate softening temperature, mechanical force or molds are used to bend the material into the desired shape.
  • After bending, the material is cooled and solidified, retaining the formed shape.

4. Advantages of Infrared Heating and Bending

  • High efficiency: Infrared heating is fast and energy-saving.
  • Uniform heating: Reduces internal stress in the material.
  • Non-contact heating: Avoids contamination or mechanical damage to the material surface.
  • High flexibility: Suitable for various materials and complex shapes.

5. Applications

  • Plastic processing: Used to create signboards, transparent covers, or decorative items.
  • Glass industry: Bending glass for architecture, furniture, or automotive applications.
  • Electronics industry: Precision forming of circuit boards or optical components.
